Spectra from Monster High. This has been sitting in my computer for a while, worked on this sporadically for what must be near 2 years now.
Some stuff i wanted to add but was too tired to write out when i first posted this:

I like Monster High is because it’s so totally girly and fun and creative, but I won’t pretend it’s more than it is. It can be as silly, even outright dumb and shamelessly derivative at times like you’d expect something that’s tied into a doll-line aimed at young girls (and one that’s chock full of puns, omg the puns), and some of it’s understandable, I figure those web episodes had a budget and tight deadlines and they still have to market it as broad as they can. But what’s really great is sometimes, when they manage to squeeze it in, the people working on it seem to put some real heart into it and write “lesson of the day” stories that are genuinely relatable and write characters that are surprisingly well-developed (referring to both web series and journals), even if the writing quality is inconsistent, and it can get pretty bad, but when it’s good I like it. They just seem to put more effort into that aspect than I’m used to seeing in these things, and whether it was a calculated corporate decision or the people that were involved just wanted to create something more substantial and were allowed to, I’m glad for it, it’s some progress to what I’d like to see more of even if it’s not perfect.

So Spectra, she’s my favourite in terms of design and concept. She’s the only doll I own, and though I still love admiring the other dolls I don’t get much out of owning them enough to go out and buy them when all they’ll do is collect dust. And her little story in the journal i loved, was surprised they actually took advantage of her being what is really the soul of a dead girl to get a touch of engaging drama out of that. You don’t expect that with the franchise being as cartoony as it is, but they did and it was cool. Actually some of the monsters being what they are have plenty of potential for that, One-Piece-style tragic pasts for all!! So anyway I wanted to draw her in a slightly more realistic (there might be a better word for that?) and dramatic way, and that’s where this painting came from.
